How INDIBA® treatment works?

INDIBA® uses radiofrequency, a type of electromagnetic energy that regulates the inner properties of the cells in our body controlling their behaviour and functions. By converting electrical current into a fixed wavelength of 448kHz, this specific wavelength has been shown to encourage ionic exchange within cells, improving tissue repair (Figure 1).

448kHz radiofrequency increases the natural body healing processes by stimulating stem cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation into new tissue-forming cells1-3(Figure 1). This wavelength can even encourage the repair of tissues with poor regenerative capacity. For instance, it promotes cartilage regeneration, by increasing the rate of chondrocyte formation (cells that form cartilages) and boosts collagen production, an essential protein for joint function and health2. Early-stage studies using cancer cells, which have uncontrolled growth properties, have also shown that the application of 448kHz regulates proliferation and induces tumour cell death4.

Figure 1: INDIBA® is applied to the injured side using an electrode that transfers energy. This energy stimulates ionic exchange in the cells and activates different cell processes.

INDIBA® can be applied at different intensities to produce subthermal or thermal effects. Radiofrequency applied at higher intensities creates a resistance with the tissue resulting in a temperature increase in the area affected. Tissue regeneration is a complex process involving a combination of events in a defined time window. By applying INDIBA® at different temperatures we can stimulate specific biological processes, that will depend on the injury stage (Figure 2).

Hyperthermia produced by radiofrequency increases blood flow5, which brings nutrients and oxygen6 to the injured site and reduces swelling (Figure 2). Therefore, INDIBA® is efficient at accelerating recovery in complex scenarios like bone fractures, reducing pain and oedema7

Figure 2: INDIBA® can be used for the treatment of injuries at distinct stages using different temperatures to activate specific mechanisms that will induce healing. There are temperature independent effects that are stimulated by the unique 448kHz wavelength.

What are the advantages of INDIBA® compared to other technologies commonly used in physiotherapy?

INDIBA® uses monopolar radiofrequency, where the electric signal travels from a radiofrequency applicator or electrode (+) to a return plaque (-), creating a closed circuit (Fig). This helps the electromagnetic energy to travel further distances compared to other technologies commonly used in physiotherapy like ultrasounds, which use single radiofrequency.

The benefits of radiofrequency covering larger areas are; 1) it allows treating deeper tissues that cannot be accessed using other technologies or manual therapy in a non-invasive way, 2) the specific frequency of 448kHz and the thermal and subthermal effects are responsible for unique biological changes that help recovery, which are not obtained by other means (e.g. TENS 1-100Hz, electromyostimulation 80-85Hz, ultrasounds 1-3MHz).

How can INDIBA be used?

We believe that the most important tool of a physiotherapist is their hands.

With our hands we can perform great manual therapies and apply different techniques. We want to improve the outcome results of every treatment by combining the manual therapy with the INDIBA technology.

The combination of these two great tools will stimulate tissue repair, accelerate the recovery from injuries and it can reduce pain from the first session; reducing inflammation at the same time.

Is Indiba scientifically proven?

Radiofrequency is part of the electromagnetic spectrum. It was first discovered to heat body tissue back in the 19th century by two very brave French guys (a physiologist called d’Arsonval and his loyal assistant; they thought they would die! All in the name of science eh!)

They lived to tell the tale and more than that; they found that using 1 ampere produced a warming sensation. Then, in comes some familiar names; Tesla and Hertz, who continued experimenting. Fast forward to the Biomedical scientists, who in 1983 started investigating Radiofrequency electromagnetic currents in therapy and launched our first device, which is now called INDIBA. At that time, it was known as TEC or TECAR with the phrase TECARtherapy being used.

Since that first device INDIBA has developed its technology and defined its specific radiofrequency delivery to 448kHz based on the evidence.

Over 19 years of molecular research at the BioElectroMagnetica Department of the Ramón y Cajal Hospital in Madrid, has published numerous papers.

They established the optimum radiofrequency of 448kHz through looking at stem cells, healthy human cells and cancer cells.

This important research has demonstrated stem cell differentiation and cancer cell related effects, proving the safety and efficacy of the Bio-stimulation of INDIBA 448kHz technology (Hernandez-blue et al 2014a,b, 2017). And the scientific community is still considering INDIBA as an area of interest.

HISTORY OF INDIBA®

Since the very first device launched in 1983, INDIBA has developed RF technology around 0,5MHz and further defined its specific frequency to 448kHz. For over 35 years we have been the leading Company perfecting this technology with 12 patents and 25 different models to date internationally recognized and awarded.

INDIBA Activ is a dedicated Brand that INDIBA has developed for Physiotherapist, Rehab professionals, Sports Medicine and Pelvic Health all over the world.
